Launching Hungary’s First Staffless Autonomous Store for Auchan

In a landmark retail innovation project, BlackBelt assisted Auchan Retail Hungary in launching "Auchan GO," the country’s first fully autonomous, staffless grocery store. Located in Budapest’s Bikás Park, the unit offers a seamless 24/7 shopping experience powered by AI-driven computer vision and complex system integration.

The Challenge: Integrating AI with a Legacy Ecosystem

The primary objective was not just to build an autonomous store, but to integrate it seamlessly into Auchan’s existing digital infrastructure.

• The Goal: Enable customers to use the existing OkAuchan mobile app for entry and payment, avoiding the friction of downloading a separate application.
• The Complexity: BlackBelt’s team had to synchronize the physical hardware (AI sensors and cameras provided by CloudPick/Kende Retail) with Auchan’s backend systems and payment gateways in real-time.

BlackBelt acted as the critical bridge between the hardware technology and the user-facing digital experience.

• Unified Entry System: We integrated the autonomous store's access control into the OkAuchan mobile app. Customers simply generate a dynamic QR code within their existing profile to enter the store.
• Frictionless Payment Flow: Our developers implemented a robust integration with the payment provider, ensuring that once a customer leaves the store, the "walk-out" technology triggers an automated transaction without the need for traditional checkout or scanning.
• Intuitive UX Design: Because the store operates without staff, the application had to be exceptionally intuitive. We designed the flow to guide users through every step—from entry to digital receipt management—to eliminate "customer anxiety" regarding payment confirmation.

Overcoming Obstacles

One of the most significant challenges was developing and testing the software without access to a physical store environment until the final weeks. Our team utilized advanced simulation methods to ensure that when the physical hardware arrived, the integration was 95% ready. Post-launch, we utilized real-time social media feedback and data analytics to perform rapid bug fixes and performance tuning.
